About Us

Axis Technology is owned by Lumenware, LLC. This privately held software company was founded in 2000 by three professors in the Computer Science Department at the University of Kentucky. The company’s headquarters are located in the Advanced Science and Technology Commercialization Center (ASTeCC) on the campus of the University.

Lumenware has been awarded nearly one million dollars in grant funding from the National Science Foundation and the State of Kentucky to develop Separable User Interface (S-UI) technology.

  • KENNETH CALVERT, Ph.D.
    Co-founder

    Ken is one of the three founders of Lumenware, as well as an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the University of Kentucky. During his sabbatical year, 2004-2005, he is supervising day-to-day operations on a full-time basis. He holds degrees in Computer Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and the University of Texas at Austin. His research specialty is network protocol design and implementation, with an emphasis on developing network-based technologies to support novel applications and services. He has published more than 60 journal and conference papers, and his work has been supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the National Science Foundation, Intel Corporation, the Kentucky Science and Engineering Foundation, and others.

  • JAMES GRIFFIOEN, Ph.D.
    Co-founder

    Jim is a Lumenware co-founder whose expertise is in the areas of computer networks and distributed computing systems. His research and consulting activities have resulted in a variety of network systems and services including group communication services, programmable networks, internet-based TV services, and digital libraries. An important aspect of his research has been the implementation and deployment of working systems. His work has received both federal and industrial support, including NSF, DARPA, IBM, CISCO, Intel, and Sun Microsystems. Since joining the University of Kentucky, he has helped raise over $9M in research funding. Jim earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Purdue University and has been a part of the Computer Science faculty at the University of Kentucky since 1991.

  • W. BRENT SEALES, Ph.D.
    Co-founder

    Brent is a Lumenware co-founder and an expert in image analysis and visualization. He has over fifteen years of research and consulting experience developing prototype systems advancing information technology in areas such as digital libraries, surgical technology, and automated vision-based systems. In addition to co-founding Lumenware, Brent has helped to bring in more than $5 million in federal research dollars at the University of Kentucky. Brent earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been a part of the Computer Science faculty at the University of Kentucky since 1991.

  • CHARLES ANDREW MARTIN
    Senior Software Engineer

    Andy is the head of software engineering at Lumenware. He has worked as a research assistant and firmware engineer for Lexmark International and as a network analyst and software engineer for the Department of Defense. Andy graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 2003 from the University of Kentucky with separate degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics, and was named Outstanding Graduating Senior in Computer Science. Both a National Merit Scholar and an Astronaut Scholar, he was one of three members on the University of Kentucky's computer programming team that participated in both the 2001 and 2003 ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals. Andy attributes his success to God's blessing and hand in his life, and is a member of the leadership team at Lexington Christian Fellowship.

  • MATTHEW FIELD
    Software Engineer

    Matt is one of our lead software engineers. He joined the team at Lumenware while still a student at the University of Kentucky. Matt graduated Summa Cum Laude in May of 2004 with a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science. He was a National Merit Scholar and a member of both the Upsilon Pi Epsilon and Tau Beta Pi honor societies. He has been involved in computer programming both as a hobby and as a career for most of his life. Today he specializes in product integration and general hacking, and is passionate about making the Lumenware vision a reality.
